As I sit and listen to the distant thunder, I know that Spring is here and so are the storms. As the lightning strikes and the TV and PlayStation console blink off, I realize I have forgotten the basics.
First, I see two plugs straight to the wall without surge suppression. Second, I realize I am watching Netflix and can easily do that on a wireless device. Tonight all is well. I unplugged everything before it got fried, but it is a good opportunity to remind myself, and you, that power spikes are a danger to your equipment.
Please let us know if you need a recommendation on a good surge suppressor. A mere power strip is not enough. If you are not sure, there should be a small circuit breaker on a surge suppressor. If you are still not sure, assume it is a power strip and go get a new one. If you have electronics that need to stay on during a storm, look for a UPS. Most UPS’s will offer surge suppression as well.
Above all, be Safe! Power can be scary and life threatening. Unplug before the storm if you are able.
